I am a painter working in oil, gouache, encaustic and tempera.
The work is figurative but not naturalistic, and there is a strong underlying structure and sense of dynamism.
Tonal organisation is important to me, and colour is used expressively rather than descriptively.
Observation underpins everything; I work directly into sketchbooks with gouache, and draw everywhere; in the street, in pubs, in trains and on buses.
The incorporation of the sketches into the final work often involves superimposition and spatial ambiguity.
Influences include Graham Sutherland, Max Beckman and Oscar Schlemmer.
